Work on Chennai Port to Maduravoyal elevated corridor expected to begin in next 3 months..

MSC boosts connections between Angola, Namibia

As part of MSC’s decision to expand its Sub Saharan Africa network, the company is reshuffling its Angola service, offering Pointe-Noire, Congo Republic (CR), and Matadi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as from January 2023.

Offering Pointe-Noire on the Angola service will represent a significant advantage for Asia and India markets in the region.  The Congolese port will serve as a key transshipment hub for cargo destinated to Angola and Namibia. Stopping the tranship via Lomé will reduce by 11 days the transit time to the main Angolan port of Luanda, and Namibe, as well as Walvis Bay in Namibia.

Covering Pointe-Noire on the Angola service, also represents new business opportunities for cargo coming from North Europe and the Mediterranean. Indeed, cargo from the main cities of these markets will transship via Lomé, Togo and be directly discharged to CR and DRC.

The interconnectivity between Angola and Namibia, and its key trade markets will strengthen Intra-Africa and international trade. This will support Africa to also enhance trade networks within the continent and support local and regional economies.

ONE to acquire three container terminals on the west coast of USA

Ocean Network Express has signed definitive agreements to acquire a 51% stake in each of TraPac LLC and Yusen Terminals LLC, currently held by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha respectively.

TraPac is a container terminal operator and vessel stevedore that provides container terminal services in Los Angeles and Oakland. YTI is a container terminal operator and vessel stevedore that provides container terminal services in Los Angeles.

These acquisitions are part of the integration of the container shipping businesses from the parent companies into ONE. The recent disruptions to the supply chain due to Covid-19 have highlighted the importance container terminals play in keeping global trade flowing.

The newly acquired container terminals will safeguard ONE’s access to terminal capacity in key and strategic gateways, support its growth ambitions and enhance its service offerings to customers.

The closing of these transactions is subject to the approval of the relevant authorities.

Naming ceremony for NYK's new LPG dual-fuel VLGC

On September 16, a naming ceremony was held at Sakaide Works of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. for a new VLGC (very large gas carrier) that NYK will charter to Astomos Energy Corporation, the world's pre-eminent liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) company.

At the ceremony, the ship was named “Lantana Planet” by Mitsuru Yamanaka, executive vice president of Astomos Energy Corporation, and the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place was cut by his wife. NYK senior managing executive officer Akira Kono attended together with others from NYK.

This vessel is a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fuel VLGC and a sister ship of Lupinas Planet, which was completed in September this year. When LPG is used as fuel, exhaust gas from the ordered VLGC will contain at least 85% less sulfur oxide (SOx) and 15% less carbon dioxide (CO2) compared to conventional VLGCs equipped with fuel-oil engines.

NYK will further strengthen its long-standing close relationship with Astomos Energy and promote the development of an eco-friendly fleet to contribute to a low-carbon supply chain and realize a sustainable society.

Etihad Airways adds flights to Shanghai as travel demand to and from China grows

Etihad Airways is set to strengthen air connectivity between the UAE and China next year, starting with an additional weekly frequency on its Abu Dhabi – Shanghai route.

Subject to regulatory approval, from February 2023, the airline will fly to Pudong International Airport (PVG) two times per week using modern Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft.

Combined with a weekly service to Beijing and a twice-weekly service to Guangzhou, this will provide travellers with five weekly nonstop flights between Abu Dhabi and China.

Martin Drew, Senior Vice President of Global Sales & Cargo at Etihad Aviation Group, said: "Etihad Airways is delighted to add a second weekly passenger service to Shanghai following the further relaxation of Covid-related travel measures.

"China is a market of primary importance to Etihad, and as one of the country's largest financial and economic centres, Shanghai plays a crucial role in our network.

"Etihad is committed to developing our operation to China, and we look forward to welcoming more travellers on board in the new year to experience our award-winning hospitality."

Today's announcement follows the launch of nonstop flights between Abu Dhabi and Guangzhou in October 2022, when Etihad Airways became the first international airline to operate long-haul passenger flights to the top three Chinese gateways since the start of the pandemic.

The airline marked another milestone in China earlier this year when it operated the first regular international passenger flight to recommence to Beijing when the capital reopened for international direct travel in June 2022.

Worldwide Flight Services to handle new SF Airlines freighter services at JFK Airport

Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has been appointed to handle SF Airlines’ new scheduled freighter services at New York’s JFK International Airport.

The Chinese airline is operating twice-weekly Boeing B747-400F flights from Hangzhou, the capital of China’s Zhejiang province, to New York, US.

WFS expects to handle some 12,000,000 kilos per annum for SF, which previously operated only ad hoc charter services on the route.

The ground handler is SF Airlines’ handling partner at three major US airports, namely Los Angeles and Huntsville International Airport, the largest commercial airport in North Alabama, as well as New York.

The contracts in LAX and Alabama were awarded in October 2020 and 2022 respectively.

In New York, SF is served in WFS’ Building 73, one of seven multi-tenant WFS cargo operations at JFK. WFS was originally appointed to handle cargo onboard SF’s charter flights at New York JFK in 2019.

WFS’ Building 73 is a 52,000 square foot facility housing a multi-tier ETV system and a connected ramp with parking for one Boeing 747 freighter.

With the start of scheduled cargo services, SF will be fully onboarded to WFS’ ePic warehouse management system, using their new 921 air waybill prefix to give customers greater visibility of their shipments.

“WFS is proud to be supporting the development of SF and its own cargo operations in North America and Europe and to be contributing to the airline’s growth through the high-quality handling services our local teams provide. SF is an important and growing customer for WFS globally,” said Rinzing Wangyal, VP Cargo JFK – business development at WFS.

Outside of North America, the two companies also partner in Liege, Frankfurt, and Paris CDG.

In the third quarter of 2024, WFS will add a further 350,000 sq ft of cargo capacity in New York, to add to its existing 650,000 sq ft footprint, with its tenancy of the first new cargo terminal to be built at JFK in 20 years.

With a capacity to handle more than 350,000 tonnes, the new Building 260 will provide three more ramp parking positions for cargo aircraft.

CMA CGM Air Cargo leases out freighters

Photo: CMA CGM

CMA CGM Air Cargo is leasing out four of its freighter aircraft to Qatar Cargo and DHL’s express airline, European Transport Leipzig (EAT), writes Oliver Link of Air Cargo News sister title DVZ.

On paper, CMA CGM Air Cargo owns a fleet of six freighters; it consists of two widebody aircraft of the type B777F and four A330-200s designed for medium and long-haul routes.

Flight data analysed by DVZ shows that the French airline currently serves its network with only two of its own freighters, [as previously reported by FreightWaves].

Four of its aircraft, however, fly for other carriers: one of the two B777Fs currently flies for Qatar Airways Cargo, mainly between various European locations and Doha.

However, the Qatari airline also occasionally uses the freighter for short-haul flights within Europe, for example from Luxembourg to Paris or from London to Basel.

The second freighter leased to Qatar Airways Cargo from the French airline’s fleet is also used between European hubs such as Brussels, Paris and Luxembourg and Doha.

DHL’s express airline European Transport Leipzig (EAT) has taken delivery of two more A330-200s from the French airline’s fleet.

The aircraft currently commute between Brussels to Miami as well as Cincinnati. This is where DHL Express operates its major North American hub.

Both EAT and Qatar Airways Cargo use CMA CGM Air Cargo freighters using their own IATA codes, suggesting that the aircraft are leased out under typically longer-term leases rather than short-term charters.

As part of this change in marketing capacity, the carrier has currently discontinued its North American connections; the previously offered flights to and from Chicago and Atlanta have been cancelled.

The word from inside CMA CGM Air Cargo is that at least the connection to Chicago will be resumed.

Initially, there will be a single extra flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Chicago on 29 December.

From 5 January 2023, the airline will then offer further flights between Paris and Chicago, it said.

CMA CGM Air Cargo currently maintains only the scheduled service between Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and Hong Kong from its original network of intercontinental connections; this route is served daily by the remaining B777 freighter.

With its second remaining freighter, the French carrier currently flies daily from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Cairo and back.

Earlier this week, Air Cargo News reported that CMA CGM was considering expanding  its air cargo operations in Vietnam, while it is also placing capacity on online booking portal CargoAi.

ASL partners with Reliable Robotics to explore pilotless freighters

Source: ASL

Aircraft operator ASL Aviation Holdings is exploring the possible use of autonomous freighter aircraft in partnership with Reliable Robotics.

The two companies will select a suitable aircraft for Reliable’s Remotely Operated Aircraft System with an initial focus on large twin-engine turboprop freighters.

ASL and Reliable will jointly assess the demand for remotely operated aircraft in Europe and in addition to remotely piloted air cargo services, the companies will evaluate aircraft suitable for remotely piloted humanitarian operations.

ASL Aviation Holdings director Hugh Flynn said: “This collaboration between ASL and Reliable is anchored on a common purpose to fully evaluate how remote and single pilot technologies can be developed and used to deliver safe, reliable and cost-effective cargo and passenger services.

“At ASL we are looking at how new technologies will change and improve aviation, and how we can be at the forefront of that change to offer enhanced services to our customers.”

Myles Goeller chief business officer of Reliable Robotics added: “ASL and Reliable see urgent market demand for automated systems that will enhance safety, increase utilisation of aircraft assets and support sustainability goals.

“ASL shares our commitment to investing in pioneering technology development to serve industry needs and improve how goods and people are transported.”

The partnership is not the first Reliable Robotics has formed with an airline in recent months.

In September, Reliable Robotics and Kenya-based airline Astral Aviation launched a new partnership they hope will increase the use of drones in sub-Saharan Africa.

The two companies said that through the partnership they will work together to develop operational, regulatory, and business plans to launch automated aircraft operations.

Reliable Robotics is working with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to certify its automation system on the Cessna 208 Caravan, and to begin commercial cargo operations in the US.

Georgian Airlines adds third freighter

Recently-launched Georgian Airlines has added a third freighter to its fleet as it looks to capitalise on cargo volumes travelling between Asia and Europe.

The airline has added a third B737-800 converted freighter through a deal with Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings subsidiary Titan Aviation.

The aircraft is being added through a long-term dry lease deal.

Irakli Mezvrishvili, general director of Georgian Airlines, said: “As we expand in the airfreight market, we are honoured to partner with Titan Aircraft Investments to bring more air cargo capacity to the region with the addition of the 737-800 freighter.

“We look forward to a strong partnership with Titan’s excellent team as they help us meet market demand and capitalise on cargo flows between Asia and Europe.”

The cargo carrier commenced operations in February 2022 and offers cargo charter and regular flights across Europe, the Baltic region, the Caucasus, the Black Sea Region, the Middle East, eastern, and southern Asia.

The airline said that the Black Sea region is a key transit and trade corridor for Eurasian countries and believes the Georgia has the potential to become an important hub for the aviation industry.
