Alang ship-breaking yard in Gujarat sees recovery, with ship arrivals up
13%
After years of dwindling activity, Alang
— one of the world’s largest ship-breaking yard — is beginning to show signs of
revival. Official data released by the Gujarat government reveals that the
iconic yard has recorded a 13 percent rise in arrivals of end-of-life ships
during the first five months of the current financial year (2025–26).
Between April and August 2025, 44 ageing
vessels with a cumulative four lakh Light Displacement Tonnage (LDT) were
beached for dismantling and recycling. This is a notable increase compared to
the 39 ships and four lakh LDT recorded during the same period last
year. July saw peak activity this year with 12 ships arriving — the
highest monthly figure seen so far, for a yard that has weathered years of
turbulence.
This modest uptick offers a ray of hope
for the yard, which has seen a sharp decline over the past decade. Alang’s
golden era was back in 2011-12, when it handled a record of 415 ships. In start
contrast, only 113 ships arrived during the entire 2024-25 financial year – the
lowest figure in over two decades.
PM Narendra Modi assured the sector’s
workers a great support and assistance.
But there is no change in ground reality. Ship breakers at Alang however
feel cheated and that nothing has changed on the ground. “I have two shipyards
and neither of them have any ships for recycling. The situation has been dull
for more than a decade and the Central and State government has not helped us
in anyway at all. Currently Alang is operating at about 25-30% of its
capacity”, a ship breaker said on conditions of anonymity as a firm linked to
him was headed for an IPO.
Dubai based Global Marketing Systems Inc or GMS – world’s largest buyer of ships and offshore assets for recycling – attributes the extended slowdown in Alang to increased demand for ships delaying the decommissioning of end of life ships. “Freight rates are strong, allowing shipowners to operate older ships profitably. When earnings from Cargo operations remain attractive, owners prefer to keep vessels trading instead of retiring or selling them for recycling. This has reduced the supply of ships reaching re-cycling yards” GMS VP said.
A steep fall in India’s exports to the
United States has raised alarm bells across policy and industry circles, as a
new report by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) reveals that the
impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff hikes has been deeper
and more widespread than anticipated, with even duty-free products witnessing a
dramatic collapse.
Between May and August 2025, India’s
goods exports to its largest trading partner declined by 22.2%, dropping from
$8.8 billion to $6.9 billion. The downturn coincided with the U.S. government's
phased imposition of steep import tariffs — starting at 10%, then 25% from
August 7, and reaching 50% by the end of the month. “August data only
partly reflects the 50% tariffs. September will be the real test — and the
worst may be yet to come,” warned GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava.
China’s Sea Legend begins Arctic Express container service linking Europe
Niche Chinese liner Sea Legend Shipping
launched a direct container service between China and northern Europe via the
Northern Sea Route (NSR) over the weekend, dispatching the 4,890 teu Istanbul
Bridge on a voyage that is scheduled to take just 18 days to reach
Europe.
The voyage, calling at Qingdao, Shanghai,
Ningbo, Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Hamburg and Gdansk, is something the line is
looking to make a regular service during warmer months.
The vessel previously ran as the Flying
Fish 1 and undertook an Arctic voyage in 2023.
Sea Legend is a Chinese-controlled
carrier that emerged during the Red Sea crisis with Chinese-flagged,
security-hardened ships operating under PLA Navy escort.
The company has targeted premium cargo
for its new Arctic service with high time sensitivity, such as electronics and
fashion, hoping to capitalise on faster delivery cycles and inventory
efficiencies.
Another Chinese shipping line, New New
Shipping, began a liner service on the NSR in 2023.
Valenciaport links Spain’s tile exports to 359 ports worldwide
Valenciaport handled ceramic tile
exports to 359 ports across 149 countries in 2024, strengthening its position
as a key logistics hub for Spain’s tile industry.
The data, published by the Port Authority
of Valencia (PAV), highlights the port’s global reach and its contribution to
Spain’s export logistics network. In total, the port
handled 80,624 TEUs of ceramic goods, representing more than 2
million tonnes of material.
This traffic primarily originated from
Castellón, one of Europe’s leading ceramic production
regions. While 191 operations were domestic, a substantial
volume of international shipments went to major markets, led by
the US, which ranked second in overall operations.
New York, Miami, and Los Angeles were the
top US ports receiving Spanish ceramics, with 182 shipments, 290,420
tonnes, and 12,916 TEUs.
A single TEU also reached the port of Honolulu, reflecting the breadth of Valencia Port’s export connections. The UK was the 3rd largest destination. British ports received 4,349 TEUs and 128,569 tons of ceramic products across 68 operations, mostly through London and Liverpool Ports.
In the Caribbean and Central America,
Caucedo in the Dominican Republic recorded 2,955 TEUs, while Hamilton (Bermuda)
and Cap Haitien (Haiti) also received tile shipments.
The port of Nassau in Grand Bahama
received 19 TEUs, Barbados imported 24 TEUs which are located more than 6000
KMs from Valencia.
In August, Valencia Port recorded over
6.5 Million tons of Cargo – an increase of 2.5% compared to the same month last
year.
China launches world’s first Arctic Container Shipping Route to Europe,
slashing transit time
The container ship Istanbul Bridge
has departed from Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in eastern China, marking the official
launch of the world’s first China-Europe Arctic express container shipping
route.
Headed for the UK’s Port of
Felixstowe—the largest container port in the country—the vessel is expected to
complete its journey in just 18 days, setting a new speed record for shipping
between Ningbo and Europe. This groundbreaking route connects major
Chinese ports—Ningbo, Shanghai, Qingdao, and Dalian—with key European ports
such as Felixstowe, Rotterdam (Netherlands), Hamburg (Germany), and Gdańsk
(Poland).
By traversing the Arctic Ocean, the route
drastically shortens the shipping distance, giving Chinese exporters a
strategic edge—especially during Europe’s peak holiday stocking season.
Zhou Xiaoping, Dy. Director of Daxie
Customs under Ningbo Customs stated that the ship is carrying a broad range of
goods including daily essentials, clothing, industrial components, high value
products, energy storage cabinets and power batteries etc. Upon arrival, the
cargo will be distributed throughout Europe.
Air India Express joins IATA, serving 41 domestic and 17 international
destinations.
Air India
Express has officially joined the International Air Transport Association
(IATA), marking a major milestone in its growth and global expansion
strategy. IATA represents over 350 airlines across more than 120
countries, accounting for more than 80% of global air traffic. Membership
requires airlines to complete the rigorous IATA Operational Safety Audit
(IOSA), ensuring compliance with over 900 safety and operational standards. Air
India Express has maintained its IOSA registration since 2017, highlighting its
commitment to operational excellence.
Sheldon Hee, Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific, IATA, welcomed the airline, stating, “Air India Express has been on the IOSA registry since 2017, and we are glad that they have taken the next step to become an IATA member. Having Air India Express as a member broadens the perspectives we bring to global issues affecting our industry”.
Mammoth Freighters approaches 777-200LRMF certification as final test
flights conclude
Mammoth Freighters has hit another milestone in its efforts to get its 777-200LRMF converted freighter model to market. The company is undertaking final test flights as it progresses towards Supplemental Type Certification (STC) for the aircraft.
"The
Mammoth 777-200LRMF is back in the air for its final certification flight
tests," said Mammoth in a LinkedIn post at the end of last week. Fort
Worth, Texas-headquartered Mammoth told Air Cargo News in August
that it had been carrying out company and formal Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) test flights for the 777-200LRMF and planned to
complete these by early October. Mammoth completed the initial test
flight of the 777-200LRMF prototype in May.
After data
from the test flights are submitted to the FAA, Mammoth will need to be granted
Type Inspection Authorization (TIA). It will then be able to handover its first
777-200LRMF to launch customer Qatar Airways Cargo. The Airline earlier this
year signed an agreement for 5 of the aircraft with Texas based lessor, Jetran.
Meanwhile,
Mammoth has seven 777-200/300 aircraft undergoing conversion; five at Aspire
MRO in Fort Worth, Texas and two at STS Aviation Services in Manchester, UK.
There are
currently three 777-300ER conversion programmes in place with IAI, KMC and
Mammoth, in addition to the 777-200LR programme in development with Mammoth.
I hope you have
enjoyed reading the above news letter.
