VOC Port Registers 42.61% Growth in Oil Cake/Copra Cargo Handling
The impressive growth highlights the port's sustained focus on operational efficiency, enhanced cargo handling capabilities, and strengthening trade connectivity. The increase in cargo volumes also reflects the growing confidence of exporters and trade stakeholders in the port's logistics infrastructure and services.
The port authority said it remains committed to facilitating seamless cargo movement, supporting the export sector, and providing reliable logistics solutions that contribute to the growth of the maritime and agricultural industries.
India-Bound Shipping Through Strait of Hormuz Rises Despite Renewed West Asia Tensions
Despite renewed geopolitical tensions in West Asia, India-bound maritime traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz continues, with nine India- and foreign-flagged vessels transiting the waterway over the past 72 hours. According to shipping sources, seven of the nine vessels are carrying cargo destined for India.
This takes the total number of India-bound ships that have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz to 44 since the onset of the current US-Israel-Iran conflict on February 28. Of the nine recent transits, four vessels are India-flagged while five sail under foreign flags.
Additionally, 15 ships of Indian interest remain in the Persian Gulf awaiting a safe opportunity to transit the strait. These include 10 India-flagged vessels, of which four are carrying fertilisers and one is transporting energy cargo.
Bagdogra Airport Sees 160% Surge in Litchi Cargo Shipments
Bagdogra Airport has recorded a significant increase in litchi cargo movement, with shipments rising by 160% compared with previous levels, highlighting growing demand for agricultural air freight from the region.
The strong growth reflects improved logistics support for farmers and exporters, enabling faster transportation of fresh litchi consignments to domestic and international markets. The airport’s cargo operations have played a key role in maintaining the quality and freshness of the highly perishable fruit during transit.
The surge in litchi shipments comes as demand for premium seasonal agricultural products continues to expand, creating new opportunities for regional producers and strengthening air cargo connectivity from eastern India.
West Asian Crisis Triggers Sharp Decline in Kerala's Air Cargo Exports
The ongoing West Asian crisis has dealt a significant blow to Kerala's air cargo exports, with shipments from both Cochin International Airport (CIAL) and Calicut International Airport registering steep declines during the March–May 2026 period compared with the corresponding months of 2025.
According to a report prepared by the Kerala Exporters Forum, cargo exports through CIAL declined by 36.41% in March, 31.54% in April, and 32.84% in May. Calicut International Airport witnessed an even sharper downturn, with exports falling by 53.35% in March, 55.73% in April, and 56.63% in May.
The overall air cargo export performance of the state also weakened during the period. Export volumes dropped from 13,580 TEUs in March 2025 to 11,238 TEUs in March 2026, while April exports declined from 11,866 TEUs to 8,622 TEUs year-on-year.
